Winter puts a lot of strain on furnaces across the country. Some are going to have to be repaired, while others will need to be replaced over the next couple of months. If you aren’t sure whether or not your furnace can get you through another winter, you should probably replace it sooner rather than later. Have a look at some of the following signs that it’s best for you to replace your old furnace, before it breaks down on you permanently.
Higher Monthly Operating Costs
The cost of running your furnace is going to rise and fall with how much you use it every month. This should come as no surprise. However, you should take note if the system is costing more to operate each month than it should be. This unexplained rise in operating costs is often due to the buildup of wear and tear on the furnace over years of normal use. As the system nears the end of its life, it will eventually wear out to the point where it has to operate for longer to change the temperature to a satisfactory level. This is what causes the higher monthly costs. Unfortunately, once a system has started doing this, the only thing you can do is replace it.
If you need to repair your furnace once every few years or so, that isn’t really a big deal. It’s different when you need to repair your furnace multiple times a year, though. That level of frequency in breakdowns almost certainly means that the system is getting close to the end of its life. Parts are beginning to wear out and break down in groups, causing the frequency and cost of repairs to skyrocket. Once your furnace reaches this point, it’s best to install an entirely new system. It will cost you far less in the long run than replacing the system one piece at a time.
All furnaces have a maximum limit on their lifespans, no matter how well you take care of them. The average furnace lasts about 10–15 years, give or take a few depending on individual circumstances. If your furnace is older than 15 years, it is a very good idea to call a professional and have them look over the system for you. They’ll be able to tell you whether or not your furnace has a couple more years of use left in it, or whether you should replace it as soon as possible. If the furnace is rapidly losing in cost efficiency, you’ll be much better off replacing it now than waiting for it to get worse before doing so. This is especially true when you consider that you don’t want your system to break down on you in the middle of the coldest month of the year, just when you need it most.
