All The Ways Air Conditioning Issues Can Ruin Your Summer

frozen-acNo one wants to deal with air conditioning issues during the summer, when the summer heat can quickly turn the inside of a home into an oven. Unfortunately, the added strain placed on your air conditioner over the course of the summer makes it very likely that issues of various kinds will occur. Preventive maintenance helps to mitigate a lot of this, but you still need to keep an eye out for signs that your system is in trouble. The following are just a few of the ways that various air conditioning issues can ruin your summer if you aren’t careful to have them dealt with as soon as possible.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your air conditioner relies on refrigerant to operate, which makes refrigerant leaks a pretty serious problem. As the refrigerant level in the air conditioning system drops, it will be less and less able to cool the home. The refrigerant leak needs to be found, and the lost refrigerant replaced, before the air conditioner breaks down entirely. Call for repairs if you notice fluid of any kind dripping from your air conditioner.

Clogged Air Filters

The air filter in your air conditioner needs to be changed every three months or so while you’re using the system. If you don’t, the air filter will eventually become clogged and prevent a lot of the air in the ducts from reaching air conditioner. No air moving into the air conditioner means no air for the system to circulate through the home. This can also eventually lead to other problems, like your evaporator coil icing over. Make sure that you change your air filter often enough to prevent that from happening.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your air conditioning system turns itself on and off every few minutes instead of completing a full cooling cycle, usually due to an electrical problem. The big issue with short cycling is that it increases the wear and tear the air conditioner accumulates over a short period of time. The longer the system short cycles, the more likely it will be to develop other problems. It also prevents the system from cooling as well as it should, since it can’t complete a full cycle. If you notice your air conditioner short cycling, you should call for repairs as soon as possible.

These are just a few of the many air conditioning problems that can cripple your system this summer. If your air conditioner is doing anything odd or suspicious, it’s best that you call for repairs as soon as you can. It might be a minor quirk or another issue that doesn’t require serious intervention, or it might be a significant problem. Make sure that you have a technician check out your system for you, just in case.
