A heat pump has two units, one installed outside and one installed inside. The two units are connected to each other by power and refrigerant lines. When in cooling mode, the coil inside the unit in your home evaporates refrigerant in order to siphon heat from the air. The refrigerant gas is then sent to the outside unit, where it’s condensed back into liquid. This releases the heat the refrigerant has collected out of the home. This operating procedure is virtually the same way that a traditional air conditioner works. The main difference between the two is that heat pumps include a part called the reversing valve. The reversing valve allows the system to reverse the direction that refrigerant flows through it, so that it can act as either a heating or air conditioning system.
