Noises That Indicate a Furnace Problem

Winter is the time of year that you have to be more vigilant about possible furnace problems. The faster you can identify a problem and get it repaired, the more damage to your system that you can prevent. So, it’s a good idea to know which signs and symptoms indicate that your furnace is having a problem. Let’s take a look at one of the most obvious signs that your furnace is in need of repair: strange noises.

Your furnace uses an air handler to circulate heat throughout your home. The air handler motor works quite hard, and uses lubricated bearings to cope with the friction created during operation. As the bearings wear down, however, the friction on the motor increases. This causes a grinding sound while the furnace is operating. If you hear this sound, you should make sure that the bearings in your furnace air handler are replaced as soon as possible. Otherwise, the furnace air handler motor might overheat and burn out. It’s far more expensive to replace an air handler motor than to replace the bearings, so time is of the essence.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is the result of heat becoming trapped in the furnace, often due to a clogged air filter. The temperature inside the furnace rises until the limit switch activates, which shuts down the system to protect it. The furnace keeps turning on, overheating, and shutting off every couple of minutes. Eventually, the massive strain that this behavior causes will result in the system breaking down. If you notice this happening, call for repairs as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may find yourself having to replace your furnace.
