Should I Replace My AC This Spring?

air-conditionerThe first day of spring may not have been more than a few days ago, but you should already be preparing your home for the summer heat. For most people, that means doing things like scheduling preventive maintenance for their air conditioners. However, if your air conditioner is not up to the task of keeping you cool for another season, then you should give serious thought to replacing it now. You don’t want to wait for the system to give out entirely in the middle of a heat wave before looking for a replacement. Have a look at the signs and symptoms below that indicate it’s time for a new air conditioner.

Higher Than Normal Monthly Bills

Your bills are obviously going to rise and fall from month to month depending on how often you use your air conditioner. If your bills start to rise faster than you think they should based on your air conditioner usage, however, then it might be time to consult with a professional. As an air conditioner gets older, it will start to lose efficiency due to various parts of it wearing down. This will force the system to operate for longer periods of time to create the same temperature changes, which will drive up the monthly costs. If this is the reason that your air conditioner is costing more to operate each month, there is not much to be done aside from replacing the system.

Constant Repair Issues

Air conditioners need repairs every once in a while, just like any other system. As the air conditioner gets older, though, it will begin to break down much more often. The more parts inside it succumb to age and strain, the more often it will break down. If your air conditioner needs professional repairs multiple times a year, it’s a good idea to consult with a professional about whether or not you should replace it. Continuing to pay repair costs that frequently to keep the system up and running is almost certainly not worth it. You would save more money in the long run, and probably quite a lot of frustration, if you installed a new system.

It’s Older Than 15 Years

Assuming you take good care of your air conditioner, and it’s not subjected to any unusual circumstances, it will likely have 10 to 15 years of healthy operation in it before it starts to experience issues. Once your system gets older than that, it will likely start to experience a growing list of issues like those listed above. The longer you insist on using the air conditioner past that age range, the more it’s going to cost to keep the system up and running. If your air conditioner is older than 15 years, you should seriously consider replacing it before summer arrives.
