Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repairs

central-split-air-conditionerSummer is not far off at all now. If you’re not already using your air conditioner to stay cool for most of the daylight hours, you will be soon. The more demand you place on your air conditioner, however, the greater the chance that the system will develop some kind of issue. Preventive maintenance can help prepare your system for the added strain, but even it cannot completely remove the possibility of a problem occurring. If you want to limit the damage that might be done to your air conditioner as much as possible, you should keep an eye out for warning signs that the system is in trouble. The faster you can identify the issue, the faster you can have the system repaired.

Dropping Output

If your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be blowing as much cold air as it normally does, that’s not a good sign. Dropping output can be caused by a number of factors. It’s possible that you have a refrigerant leak, which is causing the system to slowly lose its ability to move heat out of the home. Advanced or numerous duct leaks can also cause a drop in output. Regardless, this is not something that you should ignore. Have a professional examine your system if you think it’s not cooling the air as well as it should.

Strange Noises

As far as easily recognizable symptoms of a problem go, strange noises are near the top of the list. You are probably familiar with what your air conditioner sounds like when it’s on. If you start to hear any noises that seem unusual for normal air conditioner operation, it might mean that the system is having issues.

A loud grinding sound often means that the system’s air handler is malfunctioning, typically due to the bearings in the motor failing and causing the friction on the system to increase. Hissing and gurgling noises tend to indicate air bubbles in the refrigerant or condensate line, often due to a leak. Any kind of strange noise should be investigated by a professional, so make sure you call one when you hear these sounds.

Short Cycling

If your air conditioner is turning itself on and off every couple of minutes, that’s called short cycling. Short cycling is a serious threat to the health of the system, because it ratchets up the amount of wear and tear that the system experiences in a short amount of time. Prolonged short cycling makes further problems more likely, shortens the lifespan of the air conditioner, and prevents it from cooling the home efficiently. If you hear this happening, shut down your air conditioner immediately and call for repairs. Otherwise, you may be replacing the entire system years earlier than you otherwise would have to.
