The Advantages of Heat Pump Installation

Winter is almost here, and that means it’s time to get your home heating system in good shape. For some of us, though, it means that we need to replace our heating systems entirely. If you’re in need of a new home heating system, consider installing a heat pump. Heat pumps are unique home heating systems, which offer a number of equally unique advantages to homeowners who use them. Let’s take a look at how heat pumps work, and the advantages they can offer.

How Heat Pumps Operate

At first glance, a heat pump may not seem like anything but a normal air conditioner. There are two units that make up the system, one installed inside and one outside. These two units are connected by a conduit of power and refrigerant lines, which allows them to work together. When in heating mode, the outside unit evaporates refrigerant to absorb heat. It then sends the refrigerant gas inside, where it is condensed into liquid by the other unit to release the heat. This is pretty much the reverse of how an air conditioner normally operates. One major difference between them, though, is that the heat pump includes a part called the “reversing valve.” This allows the heat pump to operate as either a heater or air conditioner by reversing the flow of refrigerant through the system.

Advantages of Using a Heat Pump

The ability to act as either a heater or air conditioner is a massive advantage over other systems all on its own. On top of that, though, a heat pump is very energy efficient. This is especially true with regard to heating, since the heat pump doesn’t have to burn fuel to create heat.
