The Problem with Furnace Short-Cycling

If your furnace is turning on and off every couple of minutes, you have a pretty big problem. That behavior is called short-cycling, and is the cause of all kinds of serious furnace issues. If it’s not dealt with, it can actually shorten the life of the furnace by a number of years. Let’s take a look at how short-cycling happens, why it is so bad for the furnace, and what you can do about it.

Short-Cycling Causes

A furnace begins to short-cycle when heat becomes trapped inside it. This is often because of a failing air handler or a clogged air filter. As the temperature in the furnace rises, the system will turn itself off in order to prevent damage from overheating. After a brief period of cooling off, the furnace will turn on again and attempt to finish its heating cycle. If the core problem is not solved, however, the system will simply overheat once more and turn off again. This cycle will continue until the core issue is fixed.

Problems with Short-Cycling

Short-cycling puts the furnace under a lot of stress by constantly turning on and off. This increases the amount of wear and tear on the system, causing parts to wear out faster and fail more often. Along with increased repairs, short-cycling shortens the overall life of the furnace by dramatically increasing the strain on that the system endures. This is why it is so important to act quickly when you find your furnace short-cycling. If you aren’t careful, you may end up replacing your furnace years sooner than you otherwise would have to. Call for repairs as soon as you notice that your furnace is short-cycling.
