The days are starting to warm up as we move out of winter and into spring. As the temperature rises, more and more people are going to start relying on their air conditioners to keep cool on a day-to-day basis. All of that added use results in more stress on the system, which means a greater chance for things to go wrong. If you want to keep your air conditioner in the best possible shape, you should keep an eye out for the following problems.
Air Handler Issues
The air handler is the part of the air conditioning system responsible for circulating air throughout the house. This generates a lot of friction, so in order to cope the system contains a number of oiled bearings. These bearings wear down over time, causing the friction on the air handler motor to increase. If the bearings aren’t replaced, the air handler motor could overheat and burn itself out. This problem is often preceded by a loud grinding sound, as the bearings in the motor wear down. Call for repairs if you hear that sound coming from your air conditioner.
The compressor is a part in your system responsible for pumping refrigerant gas from the evaporator coil to the condenser coil. The compressor also helps maintain the rhythm of the air conditioning cycle, as it determines the rate at which refrigerant moves through the system. This part is designed to only handle refrigerant gas, so if liquid refrigerant makes it into the chamber it can generate some serious issues. The sudden pressure generated by trying to compress liquid refrigerant can cause the compressor to become damaged, or break down entirely. If that happens, the entire system will be unable to function.
