If you’ve been using your heat pump for any length of time, you should know by now what kinds of sounds it tends to make. If your heat pump starts to make any sounds you haven’t heard before, it could be an indication that you have a problem with your system. Let’s take a look at some of the weird heat pump noises that indicate a problem, and what you should do about it.
If you hear hissing and bubbling noises coming from your heat pump, it means that air bubbles have formed in your refrigerant line. Refrigerant is the core of pretty much every air conditioning system. It is the fluid that is evaporated and condensed in order for the heat pump to move heat out of your home. A leak in the refrigerant line will drain the heat pump of refrigerant, causing a steady decline in output followed by a complete breakdown. Call for repairs right away if you hear this noise.
Your heat pump air handler is the part of the system responsible for circulating air throughout the house during operation. In order to cope with the amount of friction generated while the system is on, the air handler is equipped with a series of oiled bearings. These bearings wear down over time, causing the friction on the system to increase. This produces a loud grinding sound while the heat pump is operating. If you hear this sound, call for repairs immediately. Otherwise, the friction on the air handler motor will increase until it eventually burns itself out. That will be far more expensive to replace than a few bearings.
