We have written about the importance of air conditioning maintenance before, and how it can substantially increase the service life of your system. What we haven’t done yet, though, is outline some of the more important air conditioning maintenance appointment procedures. If you want to truly understand how important air conditioning maintenance is, it helps to know what exactly goes on during a maintenance appointment. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a couple of the more common procedures.
Cleaning the Evaporator Coil
In your air conditioner, the evaporator coil is the part that evaporates refrigerant to siphon heat from the air and cool your home. Condensation forms on the coil during its operation, which attracts dirt and dust over time. Though there is an air filter in place to protect the coil, it is not a perfect system. If the coil becomes caked with dirt and dust, it will not be able to function properly and your air conditioner efficiency will drop. So, we always clean the evaporator coil during a maintenance appointment.
Checking Refrigerant Line/Levels
Refrigerant is what allows your air conditioner to actually cool your home. Without it, your system is little more than a fan. Air conditioners rely on a certain level of refrigerant in order to operate. If that level drops, the air conditioner will slowly lose efficiency and eventually break down. So, we check the refrigerant level to make sure that it is where it should be. We also examine the refrigerant line for leaks that might drain the system of its refrigerant level (also known as its charge) over time. If the refrigerant level is low for whatever reason, we can refill it.
