What You Should Know About Radiant Heating

Winter is coming, and that means it is time to think about your home’s heating situation. Forced-air is always an option, and a great one for many people. However, it is not the only option. If you are in the market for a new heating system, have a look at the benefits of radiant heating. Let’s take a look at how radiant heating works, and why you might want to install it this fall.

What Is Radiant Heating?

A radiant heating system usually involves a boiler system, though other kinds do exist. In boiler-based radiant heating, the system heats water and pumps it through a pipe network installed in the walls and subfloors of the house. As the hot water flows through the pipes, it radiates heat through them and into the rooms. This is why it’s called radiant heating. Occasionally, additional devices like iron radiators and baseboard heaters may be added onto the pipe network.

The Benefits of Radiant Heating

Radiant heating has several unique benefits, especially when compared to forced air systems. A radiant heating system is much more energy efficient than a forced air system for a couple of reasons. First, radiant heating uses a better thermal medium than forced air heating does. Water absorbs more heat, and holds it for longer, than air does. Second, forced air systems have to contend with duct leaks, which account for losses of up to 30% of their total output. Radiant systems use their own delivery networks, which don’t leak nearly as often. This energy efficiency is the largest reason why you may want to install a radiant heating system in your home, though it is far from the only advantage.
