When to Replace Your Heat Pump

Heat pumps, like any other systems, are vulnerable to decay and breakdowns over time. While they can last quite a long time with the proper repairs and maintenance, there will come a point when each of them needs to be replaced. What is important is keeping an eye out for the signs that your heat pump is nearing the end of its service life. The earlier you can recognize that your heat pump needs to be replaced, the less likely it is that you will have to go without climate control for several days when your old system dies on you. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the signs that your heat pump needs replacing.

Increased Operating Costs

The large amount of wear and tear that is accumulated by older heat pumps will result in a steady drop in output and efficiency. This causes your heat pump to have to work longer and longer to achieve the same change in temperature, which in turn results in higher operating costs. If it seems like you are paying more and more money for the same results from your heat pump, you may need to replace it.

Repair Costs and Frequency

Older heat pumps have parts break more often, due to their age and being worn down from years of use. They also tend to be more expensive to fix, as some of the older parts may not be in production anymore. Typically, you shouldn’t have to repair your heat pump more than once or twice every couple of years. If you have to repair your heat pump every few months, you almost certainly need to replace it.
