How a Chiller Works
There are two different types of chillers available on the market: air–cooled and water–cooled chillers. Air–cooled chillers are very similar to residential air conditioning systems. They’re smaller than water–cooled systems and are typically used for smaller business. Water–cooled chillers are larger and can provide much more cooling capacity than an air–cooled chiller.
With air–cooled systems, heat from your business is pulled out of the air by a fan blowing the warm air over a series of refrigerant–filled coils. The cool air is then recirculated through your business and the warm refrigerant travels to the air–chiller where the heat is exhausted into the air by another fan.
Water–cooled systems add another component to that process that allows them to achieve greater efficiency and capacity. With a water–cooled system, instead of exhausting the heat from your building into the air, they exhaust the heat into water. The exchange takes place in a chiller tube where the refrigerant circulates inside a series of copper tubes. Water inside the tube absorbs the heat from the refrigerant and carries it to a cooling tower where the heat can be evaporated into the atmosphere.
Air Chillers and Water–Cooled Chillers
Residential air conditioning systems usually have about a 3 to 5 ton cooling capacity. Larger commercial buildings require more than 50 tons of cooling capacity. For those types of situations a water–cooled chiller is needed because using air–cooled chillers would be too expensive. Water–cooled chillers have a separate cooling tower that provides the additional cooling needed for the larger buildings. But for businesses that require less than 50 tons of cooling capacity, an air–cooled chiller is acceptable.
